Anthropic Warns Energy Bottlenecks May Impact AI Expansion
Anthropic warned in its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus that difficulties in power supply and rising energy costs could slow the expansion of AI infrastructure. The company anticipates that energy expenditures will continue to rise. The prospectus notes that negotiations for electricity procurement, regulatory approvals, construction delays, and cost overruns could affect the pace of data center construction. AI companies may need to bear more costs for grid upgrades, even if the related facilities are not directly used by them. Anthropic specifically mentioned that due to certain electricity and infrastructure contract arrangements, the company may still incur related costs even if the expected power capacity is delayed or not realized. Tight supply of electrical equipment, rising project financing costs, and execution risks from partners may also drive up operating expenses. Additionally, climate change leading to higher temperatures and wildfire risks could threaten data center infrastructure and increase the costs of electricity and water resources needed for server cooling.
