BOJ to Double Annual ETF Sales to 860 Billion Yen from January 2027
The Bank of Japan will more than double its annual ETF sales, increasing stock-fund supply for private investors from January 2027. Planned disposals will rise from approximately 330 billion yen to 860 billion yen a year at book value. The new annual pace is set at about 2460 billion yen at indicative market value, based on the market-to-book ratio of ETFs sold from January to September 2026. Sales will be spread throughout the year, with the accelerated pace commencing in January 2027. This new target represents about 0.1% of trading, adjusted using January-September 2026 Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market data, compared to the previous target of 0.05% set in September 2025. The BOJ's disposal framework allows for temporary adjustments or suspensions based on financial-market conditions. Disposals since January 2026 have proceeded smoothly without major market impact. The overnight call-rate guideline remains around 1.25%, unchanged from the September decision. The faster ETF sales could indirectly affect Bitcoin, as increased equity volatility may lead leveraged investors to reduce holdings across assets, potentially impacting Bitcoin.
