Chamath Palihapitiya Predicts Bitcoin Hack and Value to Zero
Chamath Palihapitiya, an American technology investor, claims that bitcoin will eventually be hacked and will go to zero. He stated this in the Moonshots podcast on October 21. He outlined a scenario where advanced artificial intelligence (AI) could crack bitcoin's security, steal coins attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto, and profit from the price drop. However, Palihapitiya did not specify any particular vulnerability or timeline for this prediction. He noted that AI could accelerate attacks and that a powerful quantum computer poses a theoretical threat to bitcoin's security. Proposals for better protection against quantum attacks are available but have not yet been implemented. Palihapitiya's claims are not supported by evidence of a hack or a feasible attack. He emphasized that cracking SHA-256, the computational method used in bitcoin mining, does not automatically lead to access to the corresponding private keys. AI can assist in automating attacks, but a quantum computer is a different technology that could theoretically derive a private key. The transition to quantum-resistant security is considered difficult but not impossible. Concept proposals BIP-360 and BIP-361 describe possible migration paths but have not yet been enacted.
