Core Lightning Software Crashes After Update Due to Faulty Network Message
Administrators of the Lightning Network need to check stored network data following a bug in Core Lightning versions 25.02 to 26.04. This bug can cause the server to crash after each restart, disrupting payments and potentially jeopardizing funds in payment channels in exceptional cases. A malformed network message, which appears to indicate that a payment channel has two sides pointing to the same computer, triggers the crash. After a restart, the server reads the same stored message again, leading to a repeated crash. The bug has been fixed in Core Lightning 26.04.1, but the update does not automatically remove the old harmful message. Administrators must manually delete this from the gossip_store file and install the latest version of Core Lightning. A server that is disabled for an extended period can lead to missed payment deadlines on the Bitcoin blockchain, resulting in potential financial loss. There is no evidence that the bug has been exploited on a large scale.
