Retail Bitcoin miners face 6 year payback period
Individual Bitcoin miners are struggling to achieve profitability as major mining companies shift to AI data center infrastructure. Hosted mining platforms like GoMining and SAZ Mining now offer services for retail investors to rent or buy hashpower without home equipment. A mining board from Jack Dorsey’s Block is priced at 4187 dollars, with a 153 dollar monthly maintenance fee and a 15% management fee. Analysis indicates that with a BTC price of 83000 dollars, the annual net profit per board would be approximately 633 dollars, resulting in a payback period exceeding six years for the initial hardware cost. The total network hash rate is near a peak at about 1.09 ZH/s, and the payback period may extend further with the upcoming fifth halving in about 18 months, which will reduce the block reward to 1.5625 BTC. Experts caution that despite large mining firms moving to AI, existing ASIC equipment is being resold, increasing competition in network difficulty. Investors are advised to consider depreciation and maintenance costs rather than focusing solely on daily mining payouts.
