S&P 500 Companies Mention Inflation in Earnings Calls at Highest Rate Since February 2024

In October, the number of mentions of inflation-related terms during earnings calls of S&P 500 companies rose to 820, marking the highest monthly total since February 2024. This reflects concerns among businesses about rising costs and weakening consumer confidence. Analysts point out that the latest personal income and spending data indicate a resurgence in inflation, while income growth has not kept pace with rising prices. The increase in oil prices has driven up the costs of key raw materials such as fuel, fertilizers, and plastic resins, raising operational and packaging costs for airlines. General Motors expects that rising prices for commodities, logistics, and storage chips will have an adverse impact of about $2 billion this year. Even the banking sector, which is typically well-protected, is increasingly discussing inflation. The CEO of Wells Fargo stated that persistent inflation and high interest rates continue to pose challenges, and the longer they last, the greater the pressure on consumers and business clients may become.
